Medical students with a minimum USMLE 210 or COMLEX 500 are eligible for a one-month emergency medicine rotation.
 
Other options are available for students who do not meet minimum requirements or wish to complete additional rotations:

Our research program provides students with hands-on training to prepare for a career in academic medicine. Students are provided with protected time to conduct scholarly activity with support from faculty members and administrative staff.  Students completing this rotation will learn to:

  • Evaluate the evidence supporting current best practices in emergent medical care
  • Conduct a literature review and identify avenues for novel thought.
  • Develop a research proposal for the institutional review board and funding agencies.
  • Manage and maintain an active data set.
  • Disseminate their findings at national conferences.
  • Navigate the peer review and publication process.

Ultrasound

During the Ultrasound Elective, students will be able to learn proper bedside ultrasound techniques and interpretation. Students will also be able to learn indications for ED ultrasound, limitations, knobology, and image acquisition. At the end of this ultrasound rotation, the student will be able to understand the basic principles of ultrasound instrumentation, recognize indications for point-of-care ultrasound, perform ultrasound in a timely and accurate fashion, and interpret ultrasound images.  Additionally, students will be able to participate in ongoing ultrasound research projects,  ultrasound journal club, weekly residency conferences and QA reviews of all ultrasound performed in the ED.  Students will be required to complete ultrasound clinical shifts to perform a minimum number of bedside ultrasounds on ED patients. This rotation 4 weeks.
