Michael S. Payne, MD

As a radiation oncologist, Dr. Michael Payne uses radiation therapy to treat cancer of all types in adults. 

“I believe in a ‘whole-person’ approach to treating cancer patients, says Dr. Payne. “Diet, attitude, and lifestyle play an important role in treating or managing cancer.” He adds that each individual is important to him, and he strives to treat patients like he would treat a member of his own family. Dr. Payne works to communicate with his patients clearly, making sure they understand everything they want to know about their cancer and treatment.

After college, Dr. Payne worked as a biomedical engineer briefly until he decided to pursue a medical career. Dr. Payne graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois before completing an internship in internal medicine at the University of Illinois. He then moved to Kansas City for four years of residency training radiation oncology at the University of Kansas. Dr. Payne served as Chief Resident in the last two years of his residency. 

Dr. Payne has over 20 years of experience in radiation oncology. Since he joined WL Nugent Cancer Center in 2020, Dr. Payne has introduced increasingly advanced radiation procedures to Mohave County, including stereotactic radiation. These types of therapies can reduce the duration of treatment—in some cases from weeks to just days.

Dr. Payne is a member of several professional organizations, including the American College of Radiation Oncology, the American College of Radiology, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology, the Radiological Society of North America, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Brachytherapy Society.
