Arizona Department of Health Services Presents KRMC
with a Certificate of Excellence as a Tobacco-Free QUITZone

The Arizona Department of Health Services Bureau of Tobacco Education & Prevention recently presented Kingman Regional Medical Center with a Certificate of Excellence for its work in making its hospital tobacco-free and for encouraging others to quit using tobacco. Kingman Regional Medical Center became tobacco-free in July 2005.

“The certificate tells people that Kingman Regional Medical Center is committed to helping tobacco users in Mohave County quit and to maintain healthy lifestyles,” said Louise J. Strayer, Director of The University of Arizona HealthCare Partnership, a program funded by the Arizona excise tobacco tax through the Arizona Department of Health Services Bureau of Tobacco Education & Prevention.

Strayer and Mary Gilles, MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine for The University of Arizona Department of Psychology and medical liaison for the HealthCare Partnership, said the state office wanted to recognize Kingman Regional Medical Center because of its extensive efforts in assisting employees with ending tobacco use through education and referrals to state-funded cessation resources and allowing employees to attend cessation classes during working hours.

Gilles also said the state department recognized KRMC’s efforts at educating medical personnel and encouraging of the medical community to emphasize a system-wide approach to tobacco treatment for patients.

“Kingman Regional Medical Center addressed the recommendations from the Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline,” Gilles said, “and they included all of the Arizona tobacco control resources in that effort.”

Kingman Regional Medical Center provides a full range of health and wellness services, including a beautiful wellness and fitness center, a primary care physician practice (Cerbat Medical Center), advanced medical programs in cardiology, cancer, and rehabilitation, and home health and hospice care. KRMC has 213 licensed beds and is Joint Commission accredited. The hospital employs over 1,200 employees, 150 volunteers, and 100 physicians/ allied health professionals who embrace our hospital's non-profit mission of "Serving Our Community with Compassion and Commitment." We are also honored to serve as a teaching hospital in affiliation with Midwestern University to train doctors specializing in family practice, dermatology and emergency medicine.
