KRMC ACQUIRES ADVANCED IMAGING EQUIPMENT Kingman Regional Medical Center (KRMC) announced today that it has installed a positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (PET/CT) scanner that provides physicians with the capability to detect cancer and pinpoint its location within the body without an invasive procedure. Previously, the hospital made use of a mobile PET/CT scanner that was only available one day a week. With the permanent implementation of a PET/CT, KRMC can now serve more patients on a daily basis and eliminate a significant backlog of people waiting for the test. The new PET/CT scanner at KRMC combines two state-of-the-art imaging technologies (PET and CT) in one machine. The highly sensitive PET detects actively growing cancer cells in the body. A CT provides a detailed picture of the patient’s internal anatomy. Alone, each imaging test has particular benefits and limitations. KRMC’s PET/CT scanner merges PET and CT together, which produces a combined image that shows if cancerous cells exist and if so, shows their exact location in the body. With PET/CT technology, physicians are better able to detect cancer,
discover if cancer has spread to other areas, assess the effectiveness
of treatment, and determine if a cancer has returned after treatment.
Clinical research data has proven that PET/CT scanning is superior
to conventional imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of various
types of cancers.
