KRMC Celebrates April as National Occupational Therapy
Month
In
recognition of all the ways occupational therapy contributes to
society's well-being,
April
has been designated as National Occupational Therapy Month. The
rehabilitation department at Kingman Regional Medical Center (KRMC)
is commemorating
this important event by educating the community about the benefits
of occupational therapy.
Occupational therapy addresses one of the most important aspects
of rehabilitation and recovery—the return to a normal life.
The goal of occupational therapy is to help people who have suffered
an illness, injury, or some form of debilitation, develop skills
for daily living like working, driving, shopping, or even preparing
a meal.
Occupational therapy has its roots, a century ago, in helping
war veterans return to life at home. These days, occupational
therapists
offer specialized services to people from all walks of life according
to their specific needs— from complex conditions such as stroke,
amputation, and traumatic brain injury —to the more common,
such as arthritis, chronic pain, and sports-related injuries.
Occupational therapy involves special techniques to help people
learn adaptive skills for performing daily activities. By focusing
on the
physical, psychological and social needs of patients, occupational
therapists help people function at their highest possible level.
The nature of the therapy depends on the individual and their
environment and concentrates on rebuilding health, independence,
and self-esteem.
Occupational therapists collaborate with physicians and other
professionals to ensure a comprehensive approach that considers
the whole person
when developing a therapy plan.
Kingman Regional Medical Center (KRMC) is the region’s leading
provider of rehabilitation services, which includes occupational
therapy. These services are available on both an inpatient and outpatient
basis at KRMC, and in some situations, at a patient’s home.
