Barbara Merritt, R.N., CCM – Hospice Director

Office Hours:
Monday – Friday
8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The purpose of KRMC Hospice is to provide individualized care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual and practical needs of people in the last phase of life, those dying from a terminal illness. Hospice reflects a spirit and philosophy of caring that emphasizes comfort and dignity for the dying. Hospice makes it possible for the dying to remain independent for as long as possible. Hospice emphasizes comfort care, control of pain and other symptoms, and dying in familiar surroundings. Hospice care is centered on the patient, family and caregiver.
KRMC Hospice uses a team approach consisting of a doctor, nurse, nursing assistant, social worker, chaplain and volunteers. This team works closely with the patient's personal physician to provide compassionate, effective care.
Nursing Care
KRMC Hospice provides in-home visits from registered nurses for each of its patients as often as needed. On each visit the nurse assesses the patient's and family's needs and works with the patient's physician, as well as the Hospice Medical Director to manage pain and other symptoms. Nurses educate and guide patients and families through the illness, providing them with information they need to understand and cope with their situation.
Certified Nursing Assistant
Nursing Assistants provide personal care services such as bathing, hair and nail care, shaving and changing of linens. Nursing Assistants may also demonstrate personal care routines to the patient's caregiver.
Social Services
Social Services are provided for all patients and families. The social worker is available for supportive counseling and to assist with end of life planning. Referrals are made for legal and financial assistance as well as other community resources as needed.
Pastoral Counseling and Bereavement Support
Nondenominational counsel is available to any one in the community who has suffered the death of a friend or loved one. Bereavement support is also provided following the death of a loved one and continues for 13 months after the loss.
Support Groups
Support groups provide a safe place to express thoughts and feelings, to learn from each other and consider ways to cope with the loss of a loved one. The support groups meet twice a month at the KRMC Hospital Cholla Conference Room. Meetings are held on the 1st Monday of each month from 4:30 to 6:00 pm, and the 3rd Monday of each month from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Meetings are free and open – come and go as you please.
Volunteer Services
Volunteers are available to provide support and companionship to Hospice patients and families. Volunteers may stay with a patient allowing a caregiver to shop, run errands or simply take a break. Volunteers provide invaluable support to patients, families and the entire Hospice organization. Thirty hours of free training help the volunteers to understand end of life issues and provide the tools necessary to enable them to cope with the situations they will encounter. If you are interested in joining this special group of individuals and make a difference in peoples lives, contact the KRMC Hospice for more information.
Donations
While KRMC Hospice is able to bill for some services, many are not reimbursable. We are fortunate to have financial support from our hospital as well as support from civic groups, businesses, families and individuals. There are several ways to donate to KRMC Hospice. A memorial gift in someone’s name honors that person and helps provide items not covered by other services. Memorials should be directed to KRMC Hospice, and include the name of the person being honored.
Bequests and other tax-deductible donations may be directed to the KRMC Foundation and specify “For Hospice.” The Foundation supports the hospice financially through various fundraising activities.
Referrals
Anyone – a family member, patient, friend, physician, or other healthcare worker – may make a referral to KRMC Hospice. When hospice receives a referral, the patient and their family is contacted and the patient determines his desire for hospice services. Once this determination is made, the patient’s primary care physician is contacted and an order for hospice services is obtained.
Hospice services are available without regard to ability to pay.
