KRMC: A Community-Owned Medical center
KRMC is owned by the people who live in Hospital District Number One of Mohave County. It was created by voter referendum on December 7, 1982.
The purpose of the formation of the District was to move the hospital from under county control, with two major goals in mind- to keep healthcare costs down and to maintain local control. The boundary of the district encompasses all of Mohave County less the "Strip" area north of the Grand Canyon and school districts along the Colorado River near Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City.
Community Governance
A five member District Board is elected to oversee hospital assets for the public. Since November 1, 1983, the Hospital District has leased the hospital to Kingman Hospital, Inc. (KHI), a local non-profit corporation.
KHI is responsible for the management of Kingman Regional Medical Center. KHI's Board of Directors consists of 25 members holding terms of five years. The terms are staggered so that five directors are elected or re-elected each year. In turn, the 25-member board elects nine members who are joined by KRMC's Chief Executive Officer and Chief of Staff to form an eleven-member executive board, which meets monthly to oversee hospital operations. All board members are community-minded individuals who receive no compensation for their services on the KHI Board.
Local Non-profit corporation
KRMC is considered a non-profit hospital by the IRS and the Arizona Department of Revenue. Any excess funds gained after day-to-day expenses are met can be used for improvements such as purchasing new equipment and funding new services. There are no investors who receive funds or other resources for their private benefit.
