Kingman Regional Medical Center (KRMC) is pleased to announce
its latest advancement in the battle against cancer.
In Spring, 2004,
we opened a new, state-of-the-art Cancer Center. This Center
includes Radiation Therapy, houses the latest in technology,
and is staffed
with clinical experts ready to fight against the nation’s
second leading killer. Patients benefit from the expertise of our
Radiation Therapy and Medical Oncology teams as they work together
to provide comprehensive cancer care.
Chemotherapy
While surgery and Radiation Therapy are used to treat localized
cancers, Chemotherapy is used to treat cancer cells that have
metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body. Chemotherapy
is used to cure
cancer, to keep the cancer from spreading, to slow the cancer’s
growth, to kill cancer cells that have spread to other parts
of the body, or to relieve symptoms caused by cancer.
We currently offer Chemotherapy, blood transfusions and IV
therapies Monday through Friday, with support therapy
available on weekends.
Cancer teams are made up of three Certified Oncology Nurses
and a full-time Medical Oncologist. This form of treatment
can be
used in conjunction with Radiation Therapy, surgery, or by
itself.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation may be used to cure or control the disease, shrink
the tumor, or prevent the cancer from coming back. It may also
be used
to treat symptoms such as pain caused by the cancer that has
spread from the original site. In certain types of cancer it
may be used
with surgery and chemotherapy - both currently available at KRMC.
Radiation Therapy clinicians will be equipped with the
latest technology. We have purchased a linear accelerator
with accessories
that facilitate
effective treatment planning and cancer cell eradication.
Its multi-leaf collimator, an optional but effective
accessory, allows
technicians
to direct a lethal radiation beam at the cancer target,
with little or no disturbance to healthy tissue. This
means eliminating
cancer
cells with a reduced risk for complications. Rarely does
one have access to a linear accelerator with such advanced
features
in a
rural community.
