I’m putting the shop in the capable hands of Isabel, who will probably have it more organized than I ever dreamed of being. One person can’t do it alone — it takes a crew of working helpers to keep up our standards. I hope to see most of you before my last day on the 28th.

If you see the bear in red tennis shoes, please report the sighting to the volunteer department, as this bear can cause you to smile and wave until your arm falls off. The staff at KRMC cautiously call this big hairy beast Kare Bear, due to its caring demeanor and educational qualities.

In 2008 the Volunteer/Auxiliary purchased the KRMC Kare Bear as the Hand Hygiene mascot. Kare Bear can be seen putting smiles on the faces of the children at Little Minnows, the elementary schools and the annual KRMC Kids’ Day. Kare Bear and its handler teach kids about proper hand washing, brushing their teeth, getting a good night’s sleep, eating healthfully, playing hard and safely, wearing sun screen, and much more.

KRMC volunteer Georgia McGee has very graciously offered to be the KRMC Kare Bear. She and Scott Kern travel the community promoting health and happiness. If you are interested in a visit from the KRMC Kare Bear, contact Scott Kern at the Foundation/Public Relations office at 681-8656.

Here we are at the end of another great year for our organization.

Thank you all for allowing the existing board to serve another year and to help make next year an even better one.

For those who may not know who the officers are…

President Pat Shook

Vice-President Judy Stahl

Secretary/Treasurer Sandra Cofer

Corresponding Secretary Cindy Raffaelli

Gift Shop Coordinator Isabel Postelt

If any of us can ever help you, please feel free to contact us.

Judy Stahl tells me that from June 2009 – June 2010 we welcomed 41 new members.

Unfortunately we had to say good-bye to 13 members.

Sandra Cofer reports that our financial status is good. We were able to donate $8,800.00 in scholarship funds to applicants at various colleges in the June 2009 to June 2010 year. Our donations to departments this past year amounted to $36,882.00. We look forward to matching that amount this coming year. She also reports that Special Event fund raisers amounted to $2,249.42. Used book sales were $1,982.00. These amounts helped with our scholarship fund. We are finding that each year there is an increase in applicants. We try our best to give them all, but sometimes our funds are limited. We will continue to try to fund all applicants. Education in the medical field is very important.

Barbara Jones reports that the Gift Shop gross sales for July 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010 were $99,463.97. It has been an excellent year financially. Regardless of the economy, our shop has continued to prosper and it will be all due to the willing workers and cashiers in the Gift Shop, plus the volunteers, employees and public who choose to shop with us. Due to these great sales, we will be able to provide funds for donations to various departments at KRMC again this coming year.

Cindy Raffaelli said she sent 147 birthday cards, 2 sympathy cards, 37 get well cards, 28 thank you cards, 53 welcome letters, 3 flower arrangements, and 1 tray favor. Dorothy Vance reports 643 units of blood donated. Vi Shubert tells me that there were 633 blood pressures taken.

I would like to take a moment to show you how hard you all have been working for the past year.

Totals per month:

Average number of volunteers 128

Average number of VolunTeens 25

Average number of chaplains 15

Totals for the year…

Volunteer hours 31,105.50

VolunTeen hours 2,184.25

Chaplain hours 730.00

Now let me break these hours down for you:

Courtesy cart runs 16,352

Pet Therapy visits 3,148

Pt. Relations Assoc. visits 1,326

Personal Care Specialist 388

There is a company that places a value of $20.25 per hours on what we do, so if we total all the hours and multiply we saved the hospital $645,157.75, now that’s an amount to be proud of.

Last, but not at all least, I would like to say thank you to Leana Asplin and Jamie Taylor for “Prom Night” and our Installation Luncheon, not to mention all the other things they do for us. Their support of our organization means a lot to us all.

Hope you all have a wonderful summer!

Our gift shop is entirely run by volunteers, from the buyers, to the cashiers, to the ladies that dust the shelves and put out the wonderful merchandise. It is a non-profit shop; therefore, there is no sales tax charged to the customers. The money that the gift shop makes is used to benefit KRMC through donations of purchased equipment for the hospital departments and scholarships for students pursuing careers in medical fields.

The gift shop offers a wide variety of merchandise: fresh flowers, baby items, greeting cards, candy, balloons, stuffed animals, jewelry and other personal items. The buyer is always looking for new and different items to offer in the shop.

The shop also carries used books for sale. The books are all donated by KRMC staff and other members of the community. All the money made from the sale of used books is placed in the Scholarship fund for college students. Donations of used books are always welcome.

The gift shop hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:45 PM and Saturday and Sunday noon to 4:00. Stop by to see the specials, gift ideas and fun shopping.
