What is Celiac Disease?
Celiac disease is a genetically linked autoimmune disease that has an environmental trigger; because of this it’s commonly mistaken for a food allergy. Eating certain types of proteins, particularly gluten — which is found in barley, rye, oats, and wheat — triggers the autoimmune response, which damages the plicae circulares of the small intestine. The plicae circulares have tiny finger-like projections called villi, Latin for “shaggy hairâ€. The damage causes the small intestine, where the majority of nutrient absorption takes place, to lose its ability to optimally absorb nutrients, often leading to malnutrition as well as other nutrient-related maladies.
It’s estimated that 1 in 133 people have celiac disease; however, only about 3% of the people with the disease have been diagnosed. Symptoms include abdominal cramps, joint pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, malaise, weakness, depression, dehydration, and nutritional deficiencies to include overall malnutrition.

Do you “have to have†your cola?
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) report drug and food cravings (this includes cola) trigger the same areas of the brain that crave dopamine. Dopamine is a compound related to how people feel pleasure and initiate activity.
One area of importance is the orbitofrontal cortex which is tied to motivation, emotions, and how we make choices. NIDA found that drug users and obese people had similar deficiencies in dopamine-producing brain cells.
When we grab for a cola to compensate for a deficit of dopamine we experience feelings associated with reward. Here is the catch: the feeling of satisfaction achieved once the dopamine receptors have been filled is short-lived.
This puts us in a perpetual state of need, and drives us to experience a harmful reward system. Additionally, as we continue along this path, the amount of cola needed to satiate the dopamine receptors must be increased … which means only one thing: more cola! (The same is true with high-fat foods.)
Without the proper intervention, this will inevitably lead us to a never-ending lethal cycle. By and large, our behavior is complex — in many instances unconsciously driven — and has multiple motivating factors.
In the late 1800s, one brand of cola actually had cocaine in it. In 1903 the cocaine was removed from the formula, but that still doesn’t make cola any less of a drug. Furthermore, it’s potentially lethal; colas ravage the body within minutes of ingestion! You must consider abstaining from carbonated beverages, whether they are diet or regular, after learning the following facts.
